I was having problems accessing the registry of windows xp from a remote machine on the same network. I am able to access the the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS folders by making changes to the file HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg.
