Whenever problems with the XML filter are raised (are there are many, both very real and some red-herrings!), the helpful advise generally is that you must use the Admin console to cache the XML elements as properties in order to get it to work at all.

How does one get the file folder in a index directory to apear with the blue globe on it so that is can be searchable. It looks to me like one is supposed to attach a web site to it via the drop down box. Which I have seem to have done.

Hmm I read this, but vpath is not any clearer to me. My issue with it is that I have a web server specd in the properties but searches all return the same url for any document selected. Vpath doesnt seem to be working by default.
