Adding Server 2008 DC to 2003 Domain

New to server 2008.

I have an existing 2003 domain with 2 DCs. Can I simply go thorough the 2008
setup with a new machine and make it a 3rd DC? Any special pre-installation
steps?

Also, what about adding it to a 2000 domain (with two DCs)? I know about
"adprep" being required when upgrading from 2000 to 2003. But what about
simply adding a 2008 DC to an existing 2000 domain?

Advice, links appreciated.

Thanks,

Frank

Hello Frankster,

You have to run adprep command again from the 2008 disk on the schema master
of your domain, to add a 2008 DC to an existing domain. If it should only
work as a member server just add it to the domain without doing anything
special.

Thank you. This is the same for a 2000 domain, right? IOW, the adprep on the
2008 disk will also work on a 2000 domain, right.

Again, thanks.

Hello Frankster,

Yes, it works but you can not inplace upgrade a 2000 DC, that needs at leaset
2003 SP1.

Thanks. Regarding not being able to in-place upgrade a 2000DC to a 2008DC,
it sounds like my plan to simply add a new 2008DC and afterward decommission
(or demote) the present 2000DC is a good one.

Just one last question please... Can I *assume* that just as in an upgrade
from 2000DC to 2003DC, that the newly added 2008DC will automatically take
on the Schema Master, FSMO, GC, PDC emulator roles in the new 2008 domain?

Will be the easiest way,yes.

If it is the only DC, it should also move the roles automatically like before,
but if you will be sure, do it manuel and you can also check the event viewer
for success of all the moves. And also make it Global catalog and DNS server,
before demoting the 2000 DC.
