Basically this is the vendors job. He has to provide drivers for all his
functionality. With MS you get a bunch of drivers so you can work.

That and depending on the video card being used there should be an option to
allow using more resolutions.  Some cards have more support for this than
others.  You can usually make use of a more recent model number monitor that
has the same features.  Dell's 2405FPW isn't "supported" in Vista.  But
using the most recent model number for the equivalent monitor works fine.
The "driver" for a monitor isn't really an actual driver in most cases.
It's a set of configuration parameters in an .inf file.

Really though, lay the blame where it belongs.  On YOU for not checking
hardware compatibility before upgrading.

One reason you won't find much support (from MS or Vendors) for things like
graphics and sound is that a presumption is that most users will use the
server OS on machines that are used as servers; where good graphics and
sound are rarely used.  I'm running 2008 as my desktop OS as after trying
all the OS versons.  2008 is (too me) noticably crisper.  While some drivers
are available for 2008 (very few though) often you can get a vista driver to
work.  I wouldn't expect to see much support directly for '08 in many areas.
In fact, in areas where you expect to see strong support it is often
lacking.  For example, I can't 2008 on a RAID 10 array with the new AMD
Chipset on a new ASUS board because 2008 will only let you use certified
drivers and there are none (That I can find after weeks of searching and
trying anything remotly close).  I'm dual booting now so I can get
performance when I need it and play games when I want to.
