Fax modem replacement

I have replaced the modem with an exact same model.  The only difference is
the firmware in each.  I thought I could just unplug the old, plug in the
new, restart fax service and away we go.  Not.  Is there a file somewhere
that contains modem s/n or some setting stored on the server that allows it
"work" with the server?   Right now the modem either does not answer at all
or answers and goes into an abnormal modem squawk sequence.  The squawk
never stops.

I have returned the model, got another new same model, but same thing.  It
is a USR5658e.  Have never had problems with them on other systems before.
I am now thinking of getting it replaced with a USR3453c.

Since all this started, I have uninstalled Fax Services, the modem, redone
everything at least 4 times.  I don't think the uninstall really works
thouroghly.   What is the best way to reinstall?

Best way to install is to use the Windows Standard 56000bps modem drivers.
I've had the same issues. Fax modem worked great then I had to install a
second fax modem. Could not get the second one to work using the mfg
drivers. So I called TS and they made the recommendation. Now here is the
funny thing. I wanted to switch COM ports with the existing fax modem. So I
removed the original one and added the second one to COM1. When I went to
reinstall the original one to COM2 I used the same drivers but could not get
it to work again. So I thought I'd tried using the Windows Standard 56000bps
modem drivers and it works perfectly. Now both of them are using the
standard windows drivers but they both work great. Go figure!!!

Post back your results. I'm curious to know if it isn't just me............

It works!

Between the original problem and this I got hardware fixated.  Now I realize
it was a driver problem and never occurred to me.  The new firmware modems
don't like the old driver at all.   I'm now using what you suggested and
relieved.  Thanks.
