using round robin to distribute load, i know, a poor mans solution, i want
to use different TTL's so that some machines are cached longer and get more
load. however, when i query the record on the authorative dns server, all
entries will get the same TTL, namely the lowest TTL. also a ping to the dns
name gives me the same result.

is it not possible to use different TTL's?

Once you've created the record, choode View, then Advanced. Now go into the
record and bump up the TTL.
