nslookup only works

Hello,

we have one Server 2003 where nslookup only works sometimes. We have a lot
of trouble with this server because it is our Terminal Server and sometimes
it is very slow.
I think it is because of the problems with the name resolution.
So my question is, what can be the reason for nslookup only working sometimes?
All other servers work fine and name resolution works always.

Sincerely

mak

This posting contains contradicting information, please clarify.

When nslookup doesn't work what does it do?
Are all internal machines using only the internal DNS server? (Assuming
Active Directory is in use)

I believe the exact wording is
"Can't find server name for address <IPAddressofDNSserver>"

This does not mean nslookup is not working, it means there is no reverse
lookup zone (or PTR) for the IP of the DNS server.
Create a reverse lookup zone and PTR for the DNS server's IP and the message
will go away.

Kevin,

I have a simliar problem.
For my reverse lookup zone I have a folder for 0.in-addr.arpa
127.in-addr.arpa and 255
127has 2 0 folders

How do change it from 127 to 192. and they are running in "Standard
Primary"

Thanks
Joe

You cannot rename zones, these are auto-reverse zones that are created by
the DNS server.
You have to create a new zone, and BTW, don't use 192.x.x.x (aka
192.in-addr.arpa), that's a public subnet, use 168.192.in-addr.arpa or
x.168.192.in-addr.arpa, IMO preferably the latter.

Kevin,

Thanks for emailing back.
I got it to be like this: x.34.168.192.in-addr.arpa
-i see the NS and SOA with my server name
-when click on x.34.168.192.in-addr.arpa and properties I see under the
"General"tab
"Zone file name: x.34.168.192.in-addr.arpa.dns

Seems to be working fine but some people are experinecing latency.

Also confused on seeing something else
I right click My Computer and click Manage on the bottom I see "DNS"
Then the server Then the forward and reverse zone. Under reverse zone i
see
192.168.34.x subnet (the right panel i see the SOA and NS)

See what I am looking at accurate? If not how to fix it?

Thanks
Joe

If your Network is using 192.168.34.x IP addresses it is correct.
The difference in the way you see it (the zone) in the DNS Management
Console and the Computer Management Console, is the DNS  MMC is using View>
Advanced while the Computer Management Console is not in Advanced View.
Select the DNS server in the Console, then click View> Advanced. It won't
stick though, the next time you open the console it will be back in standard
view. The only way you can save console changes is to Author the console,
then it will ask you to save the changes.

Yes, I recommend using the netdiag tool specific for you operating system.
You find it in the Support Tools directory of the installation CD. Win2k, XP
and Win2k3 all have different versions of the tool, the Win2k version won't
work on XP or Win2k3, and I'm not sure if the XP version works on Win2k3, I
haven't tried it.

Ok, isolate the problem and it will be easy to fix almost
always.

Does this client have a NAME problem "getting to the Internet"
or is it resolving Names fine but failing to route?

   Ipconfig /all

If a name problem:

Does this client use PRECISELY the same DNS server
settings as the 'other working clients'?

If a routing problem:

Does this client use precisely the same "default gateway"
and subnet mask as the working clients?

(Or post your IPConfig /all output here for both a working
and the troubled clients -- we are primarily looking for
differences on the machine that works and the one that
does not.)

> Can i run netdiag tool on the client or is it just for DC?

Sure, in fact for many things DCDiag is better for the DCs
anyway and NetDiag for the non-DCs (but it works on DCs
too.)

Hello Kevin,

sorry for the translation but it's a german server.
There is already a reverse lookup zone and a PTR for the DNS server.
All other servers are working fine. Only the Terminal Server has problems
with name resolution.

In any case that INITIAL "server not found" in NSLookup
is mostly IRRELEVANT as long as the actual DNS query
(they one you wanted to know) works....

If you are getting INCONSISTENT results with NSLookup
then likely it is due to (improper) differences being returned
from multiple DNS Servers configured on the local "client
NIC->IP properties".

In that case:  use a specific DNS server in NSLookup and
determine which DNS server is wrong:

nslookup  target.name.com   IP.of.DNSServer.One
nslookup  target.name.com   IP.of.DNSServer.Two

EVERY DNS server that appears on the "client NIC" MUST
return the same (correct) set of answers.

Compare the ipconfig /all from all servers, all should list, especially if
AD is in use, only the internal DNS that can resolve the Active Directory
domain's network.
If you are getting "Can't find server name for address <IPAddressofDNS>
non-existent domain" then the PTR of the DNS server's IP does not exist in
the DNS server it is currently using.
If nslookup is currently using an external or other DNS server, and you
invoke the change server command, the PTR lookup for the server you are
changing to is sent to the one you are changing from. (I hope this makes
sense to you because it is very confusing)
I would suggest using Dig (Come with the BIND suite) or my favorite, Netdig
(www.mvptools.com) neither of which perform the PTR lookups on every query.
