We have Active Directory on Windows Server 2003. I'll call our domain
ourdomain.com. All machines have the DNS suffix set to
local.ourdomain.com in the DNS properties.

We have a problem with the UK Health and Safety site at www.hse.gov.uk.
When this is PINGed from a local machine, it resolves it to
www.hse.gov.uk.ourdomain.com and has the IP external address of our web
server for ourdomain.com. Understandably, it shows an error page as our
web server doesn't know about the domain.

I originally thought it may not like the gov.uk TLD but thought to try
another (www.direct.gov.uk) but this is fine. It is only the HSE site.

I know this is nothing at all to do with HSE themselves, it is an
internal problem to us. Any ideas how I can go about fixing this? I can
temporarily workaround the problem (I think) by putting an entry in the
hosts machine with the actual IP for users who want to get to this
site.

Incidentally, all machines I have tried, including our DC have the
problem of appending the suffix 'ourdomain.com'.

Many thanks,

Try unchecking "Append Primary Suffix" checkbox in IP Properties, Advanced,
DNS tab.
