I'm in the process of upgrading our domain to 2003. The forest root DC was
upgraded first and the two zones (mlg.us - 238 records, ipi.ny - 34 records)
within DNS appear to be fine. I'm setting up a new 2003 server. I
successfully ran DCPROMO and the root domain mlg.us appears in DNS with 238
records (same as original server). When I add the ipi.ny zone to DNS on this
machine I receive only 2 records - SOA and NS. No directories (_msdcs,
_sites, etc...).
The mlg.us domain is active directory integrated, the ipi.ny is standard
primary.
Any ideas why my ipi.ny zone is not populating ?
Thanks in Advance,

If ipi.ny is a Primary zone on one DNS server, then you should make ipi.ny a
Secondary zone on the other server(s) and stipulate the IP address of the
DNS server holding the Primary zone, of course with zone transfers allowed
in the Primary zone properties. Otherwise no transfers will occur.
If you just make it AD Integrated, the zone will automatically come across
to all DC/DNS servers.

Thanks. I setup the ipi.ny zone as a secondary and immediately it populated.
If I wanted to make this zone AD Integrated do I need to delet the zone from
both servers and re add it ? I don't remeber the reason why the ipi.ny zone
was not AD integrayed to begin. is there any reason not to setup a zone as AD
integrated if DNS is always installed on a DC ?
The ipi,ny domain controllers are still running 2000 SP4, as far as I can
see that shouldn't matter as long as SP3 or later has been installed.
Thanks Again.

You can just change the zone type from a Secondary to AD Integrated and it
will populate immediately.

You should bring everything up to the same SP levels. No telling some things
just may not work together due to the SP differences.

Probably better to change the primary standard zone to AD integrated first.

Good catch. I must have assumed he was talking about his mlg.us domain,
which is already AD Integrated. He needs to change ipi.ny as such first.

If the ipi.ny zone on the root DC is standard primary, the ipi.ny zone you
add on the second DC should be standard secondary. Then you can configure
zone transfers - see:

Thanks for the link. I need to read up more on the types of links and when to
use which type.
Thanks Again.
