Upgrade domain functional level of child Before root?

Currently have a single domain in a forest, in 2000 native mode, with all
Windows 2000 Server DC's.  About to create a new child domain, using Windows
Server 2003 DC's.  At the end of the project we will upgrade the DC's in the
original\root domain to Windows Server 2003, then switch the functional level
of the domain, and later forest, to Windows Server 2003 mode.

Question:  After we build the child domain, can we upgrade it's domain
functional level to Windows Server 2003 mode?  Or, must we upgrade the domain
functional level of the root domain to Windows Server 2003 "Before" doing so
for the child domain?  [This question only pertains to the domain functional
level].

Feedback highly appreciated!!!!

Hi Mark,

You can change the Domain Levels independant from the structure, the Domain
Level only influences the domain and not the forest. The forest level takes
care of cross-domain changes.

Just to mention it: You know that you have to update the schema of your
domain before introducing the first Windows Server 2003 as DC - independant
if it's supposed to span a subdomain or is added to a existing domain.

Thanks!  Yes, I was trying to keep the post short, but I guess step .5 is
"adprep /forestprep" before building the child domain, huh?

As long as I read that 0.5 then yes ;-)

After building the child domain, you need NOT to raise the domain function
level of
ROOT/ORIGINAL domain in order to raise domain function level of CHILD DOMAIN
to Windows 2003 native mode.
Domain function levels are separate for all domains so, we can have
different domain function levels for different domains in a forest (either in
parent/child relationship OR domain trees).

see following MS article for info on functional levels.
