On the WINS tab in the connection properties of XP make sure "enable NetBIOS
over tcp/ip" is selected. On Windows NT; Control Panel|Network|Services and
make sure NetBIOS is installed and bound to the network connection. Also
make sure you have a browse master.
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters
Set all but the pc designated as browse master to
MaintainServerList = "Auto"
IsDomainMaster = "False"
These may also help.

Now, one XP box can access the NT box, but the NT box cannot get back to the
XP box. This is VERY strange. I have not had these problems before. I
have tried everything that I can think of, and have done in the past, but
nothing (including reload) seems to fix issue.

Just so you do not feel alone. I have simular problem. One XP WS that can
not map to an NT server by name. XP can ping by Name or IP. XP can Map by
IP. (Till the day before this had all worked fine). The NT machine shows in
the XPs My Network Places but when you try to access we get Path Not Found.
All machines use DHCP, the DNS & WINS entries all appear as then should.
And no one has yet been able to offer any advice. If you do find a solution
please post it.

One way communication is in 90 percent of cases caused by "wrong" security
(firewall) settigns. As you are not able to even use ping command both ways,
I bet it is firewall setting on XP computers. Be sure you turned off all
installed firewalls - not only build in Win XP firewall but also Zone Alarm,
Symantec (Norton) Internet security (or Personal firewal) etc.
Is DHCP server also able to do WINS?
Are your TCP/IP settings taken from DHCP correctly? Use following commands
in CMD window and compare results on NT and XP machines, especially check
subnet mask - wrong mask is good source of weird network behavior):
ipconfig /all
route print
Are netbios names of XP machines compatible with Win NT? (only up to 15
character long and using only standard ANSI alphanumeric characters).
However, function of ping do not depends on netbios names.
If you add other protocol (netbeui or IPX/SPX), are you able to communicate
using netbios names?

George
