Hello,

MS KB Article ID 174567
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=174567
Last Review     :       September 23, 2005

States:
Microsoft has confirmed this [lack of AGP support] to be a problem in
Windows NT version 3.51. A supported fix is now available, but has not
been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems
experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by

this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next
Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical
Support for more information.

Does anyone know where to download this "fix"?

Many thanks!

The article states:  "AGP support has been added to Windows NT 4.0 in
Service Pack 3. Obtain and install the latest service pack."

Get the last NT 4.0 Service Pack here:

Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/sp6/allsp6.asp

Service packs are cumulative, the latest pack contains fixes released in
earlier packs, SP6a contains fixes released in SP3.

I've done a thorough search of my own archives and the 'net and
unfortunately I can't find any references to this fix :-(

Are you sure it wasn't tackled in NT 3.51 SP5 ??  I'm certain I've had
my machine here running on NT3.51 with a Matrox G400 AGP card and
everything functioned correctly. I know I hadn't applied any AGP
specific patches.

There were several 'Post SP5' hotfixes for NT3.51 - they are still
available on the Microsoft FTP server - Q174567 is not amongst them.

Hi Calvin,

I have the SP 5 applied and my ATI All in WOnder (8MB) does get 640x480
at 16 colors but nothing higher than that.  In Main, Windows NT Setup,
Display isn't even listed, just mouse and keyboard.

I too archived all of the post sp5 fixes however none of them are
specific to agp.  I put a request in to msft support on this however I
doubt that I will hear anything back on the location of the fix.

THx

Hi ~Von,

I can't help you either but I've had a lot of similar problems in the past.
AFAIK  you've got 3 options:

1. getting a patched hal.dll (that's what you were looking for)
2. running your card in AGP1X mode - should work if you are able to force it to
AGP1X
3. get a vendor NT3.51 driver that supports AGP2x (ore more?)

Concerning 3:
I'm not sure what chipset is used in your card. There are a lot of different
(and differently aged) all-in-wonders out, aren't they?
So find this out first. (I haven't got much ATI-cards and not a single one in
the last 10 years...). By the chipset you may find a vendor who sold a card with
the same chipset (the brand most likely won't matter!!!). Asus, Creative and I
think a lot of other vendors did supply AGP drivers even for NT3.51 in the past
(I think they did hardly more than switching it to AGP1X mode). I guess your
card is too new for this, but e.g. for NVIDIA cards you *can* use drivers from
precursor models without problems e.g. on WfW3.1 / NT 3/4 (e.g. Riva 128 drivers
for Geforce2) because they distinguish in Direct3D or other "new" features only
what doesn't matter here, ;-)
However, if your card is pretty new, you may want to get an older one....
