How to Start a Service from command line - 16 Dec 2005 18:37 GMT
Hi,
I have a problem when i decide reboot the Server ... the message is
"Inaccesible boot device ...". I supose that i make a mistake when change de
service for my backup tape unit (SCSI). I put it into "Automatic" I don't
remember the name of that service , just remember that "160" is in the name.
I supose the problem is in the adaptec scsi card (Ultra 160). I want to know,
after boot from a flopy, how to  start again that service.

Thanks in advance

Sergio

Usually means your controller driver and or the boot partition can't be
found.

Try creating a boot disk and loading the controller driver also from floppy.
For the floppy to successfully boot Windows NT the disk must contain the
"NT" boot sector. Format a diskette (on a Windows NT machine, not a
DOS/Win9x, so the "NT" boot sector gets written to the floppy), then copy
ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini to it. Edit the boot.ini to give it a
correct ARC path for the machine you wish to boot.

In order for this to work you'll want to change the arc path in boot.ini
from multi syntax to scsi syntax to indicate that Windows NT will load a
boot device driver and use that driver to access the boot partition. Then
also copy the correct manufacturer SCSI, or raid driver to the floppy but
renamed to ntbootdd.sys

Something like this below;

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
[operating systems]
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT 0,1"
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT 0,2"
scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT 1,1"
scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT 1,2"

If you have a Windows 2000 CD you should be able to use the Recovery
Console and the enable command.  You will have to load the SCSI drivers
when you load the Recovery Console, at the beginning you will be
prompted to press F6 to "Install Mass Storage Device" drivers.

If you are right about the cause, "Last known good" option in startup hw
profile can help you. Press spacebar during first three seconds after NT
loader startup menu and choose Last Known Good from hardware profiles menu.
