But that doesn't explain how to install windows nt after windows xp has
already been installed. i thought there was a way by backing up certain
files ?

You should not install separate OS's on the same partition.

See the other replies for why you shouldn't. The partition is probably
formatted NTFS or fat32 so you wouldn't be able to anyway since Windows NT
doesn't know fat32 or the new version of NTFS
