My Nt40 will not work when logging in,it will show: STOP UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP --- --- BEGINNING DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY .............. I want to reinstall it,but do not want it overwrite my previous setttings like dns,users etc.can the re- installation keep my original settings in NT40?thanks. Trap messages are almost always related to bad hardware. Some causes, Bad RAM, bad video/NIC, any new hardware added recently. To answer your question you really cannot reinstall NT to keep the old settings. You must either repair with a CURRENT ERD or do a parallel install, reinstall to a different partition, but that will only give you access to the data. Any settings will be lost and so will all the software that is installed. Have there been any recent changes to this machine?
