Hi there group.

Sorry if I am at the wrong place, don't know where to ask.

We are an organization here (Sweden) helping kids who is suffering from
Cancer to get their own computer. Now we have been provided with 10 PC's
from a bank but it is Win NT 4 in those computers and we need to install
Win98 instead. We have (from Microsoft..Thanks you so much, very kind to
support us with that!)..Win98 SE fully licensed CD's to each and every PC.

In the instruction it says to put in the CD-ROM and floppy and restart the
PC then the floppy should reformat the HD and then after that the CD
continue with the installation but it does not as it just restarts after the
floppy and all is back to the Win NT again. What are we doing wrong? Do we
need to run "fdisk" as it seems the HD has three partitions, I guess we need
it!? Is there something we should know about Win NT...we are not use to work
with that....I guess we need to convert to FAT 32? Is it as simple as it is
in Win98? Sorry for the lack of info, ask me if there is something missing.

Thanks for any answer someone might have and kind regards,

Gunilla.

Either your setup floppy boot failed or setup script on floppy is unable to
handle partition scheme on disk.

I think you need to check BIOS settings first to see if you are really
booting from floppy and if you have disabled virus checking.  Eventually, if
it is proprietary designed machine with enhanced security,  check if there
is not any other lock enabled on disk system sectors.

Banks are often using expensive machines with proprietary design and some of
them (like Compaq or  Dell machines) are requiring small service partition
on begin of disk. So be careful with utilities like delpart.exe (you can
download this one on MS web site). First use fdisk and check partition
scheme, if there is small (20-40MB) unactive primary partition of unknown or
weird named type (ie. not FAT, big DOS, NTFS or HPFS) on begin of disk, do
not delete it and do not use delpart.exe on this machine. Use fdisk or
similar partitioning tool and delete remaining partitions, create one
primary type FAT32 partition, set it active and try to run your floppy
again.

Note that if you have problem with deleting NTFS logical disks using FDISK
and you cannot use delpart to clear out whole table, you can use any NT
based OS installation CD (or even only NT setup floppies - look for images
on www.bootdisk.com if you have not any) and run installation until
partition setup screen, delete unneeded NTFS logical disks from here and
cancel installation immediately.

luck

George

Hi George and thanks for your answer.

I don't really know yet, until tomorrow, if it is Dell or Compaq as I have
not seen them yet, it was the chairman of this organization who called me
after he failed to install Win98 SE. The only thing I know is that the PC's
is some 3 to 4 years old with a flat screen connected to the cover...it is
not a tower. Sorry for a bad describing and bad English!

I will print out your advise and take it with me and I also went to
bootdisk.com...thanks for the idea! ;-))

Cheers / Gunilla.
