You need the later NT IDE driver atapi.sys from Service Pack 4
or later.  You can download the files here:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-unsup-ed/fixes/nt40/atapi/ATAPI.EXE

Expand the files to a floppy disk.  Boot with the NT setup
floppies.  During the running of disk #2, you are given the
option to specify mass-storage controllers.  Choose "S" to specify,
and a list of drivers opens in the next window.  Choose the last item
in the list: "Other Mass-Storage Controllers."

Supply the disk with the later ATAPI driver when prompted.
Setup should now recognize the full size of your disk.

Setup can create partitions up to 4GB.  You can create other
partitions and logical drives as you like using Disk Administrator,
after NT is up and running.

If 4G is not enough for you, you can preformat this disk in other machine
running NT system or expand existing partition using Partition magic or
similar tool. But be aware that primary system partition (this one where NT
loader files are located - usually c:) should not exceed 7,8GB becasue of
limitation of NT4 OS loader.

NT setup is not able to install to partitions other than FAT16 or NTFS ver
4. Windows NT 4 is not able to use FAT32 partitions without third party
driver - which means that you cannot install  NT4 OS or  NT4 OS loader to
such partition.
Windows NT 4 is able to use higher versions of NTFS in case of proper
Service Pack level (ie. SP4 or SP6). NT setup  is not able to see such
partitions, so You cannot use NT setup repair feature if you have OS
installed on them.

This is what I do. Create a FAT16 primary partition of around 500 megabytes.
Then use Partition Magic 5.01 or higher boot disks to create a logical NTFS
partition of about 6.5 gigabytes (keep it less than the 7.8 gig barrier).
Start
NT4 setup and install NT on the NTFS partition. After you are finished
install
SP6a. Then use Partition Magic to resize the logical NTFS partition
containing
NT4 to whatever size you want. Works great for me.

Hi Lawrence,

have a look at:

http://nt4ref.zcm.com.au/bigdisk.htm

This article explains how NT4.0 can be installed on HDDs larger than 7.8GB and
what restrictions apply.

Calvin.
