I have two domain controller in windows 2000 adv.
One of the domain controller takes forever to boot, so
I booted in 'safe mode with networking', and found that DNS is not starting.

When I try to manually start it says.

"could not start DNS server service on local computer.
error 1077: No attempt to start the server has been made since the last boot."

what's wrong with this machine.

arrrrrrrrrr..

I suppose if you don't know what it is you aren't using it. What services
are you running on this server? In a command prompt run this command, net
start this will list the running services.

Probably a good place to start on the problem server is to point it to the
other server for DNS then try reinstalling DNS on this server.

You mean uninstall and install DNS on working server that has all the
operation master role right?

So I guess whatever info that dfs is using to set dfs root is stored
in Active Directory and that is stored when DNS is installed?

Is there anyway to change it without re-installing DNS?

I mean if I re-install DNS my network will be down completely.. :(

You still have DNS running good on one server, right?
Point both to it for DNS then reinstall the DNS service on the box DNS won't
start on.
Its not a major deal as long as you have at least one DNS is running in good
shape.
If you have your zone stored in AD all the zone data will still be there,
when the service is reinstalled your zone will reappear in DNS.

When you get both DNS servers running, point each server to the other for
Preferred DNS then to itself for Alternate.
