We are getting ready to implement Windows 2003 Active
Directory.  We currently have a Window NT 4.0 domain.  We
would like to keep the NT domain intact and build a
parallel AD forest.  We will migrate users & computers
over time.  We would also like to keep our registered DNS
domain name.

Examples:
Our current NT domain is called 'NT40_DOM'
Our current DNS domain is 'company.com'

Can we build a parallel AD forest called 'company.com' and
create trusts between the old NT domain?

The domain names (Windows) will be different but the DNS
name is the same AND is the same as the new AD root
domain.  Is this possible or will I have problems?

Thanks,
Dave

You can do this, you have to set up a split namespace where the internal DNS
has authority over the internal domain and the external DNS has authority
over the public domain.
In the internal DNS you will need to add records for names in the public
domain, such as www and mail, these records will need to have the IP of
their respective sites.

Administratively, it will be easier to have a different AD domain such as
"ad.company.com" If you want, even if the AD Domain is ad.company.com you
can add company.com as an alternate UPN logon name so users can logon with
user@company.com.
