Trying to find a forum/help that will tell me the best way
on converting servers.  I currently have in place a NT 4.0
server running DHCP and DNS.  I have purchased a new
server and have 2000 loaded on it to replace the NT 4.0
server.  What I need is help in the best way to convert
from old to new server.  Also I found info on DHCP where
it says it don't have to be a Domain controller but
nothing on DNS. Does DNS have to be on a domain
controller?  One thing I was thinking is I have a Domain
controller and I'd just make this new server a member of
the domain??

A side note we are using Netware as login server and do
not have AD ( don't plan on it anytime soon)
Thanks
Jess

DHCP and DNS do not need to be run on a Domain Controller. To move DHCP to
the new server see:

130642 How to Move a DHCP Database to Another Windows Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=130642

To move DNS, I would create a secondary zone (or zones) on the new server,
then after the zones transfer take the old DNS server down and convert the
new one to a primary.

Thanks for the information!

What do you mean by "after the zones transfer"?

Hi Jess,

This refers to transfering the zone from the master to secondary.  You will
need to initiate this.  For more information, please see;
