does anyone know how to run windows NT in safe mode? I am
trying to install adaware software to remove an adware
virus.directions call for installing adaware while in the
safe mode and to keep pressing F8 when booting up but this
does not work.

There really isn't a "safe mode" for Windows NT. You can boot vga mode (
with /BASEVIDEO  appended to boot.ini startup line)

Something like;

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT [VGA mode]" /basevideo
/sos
