I bought windows xp yesterday. It was an upgrade from
windows 98. Ever since I have been getting a NT
Authority\System error and it shuts down my pc. Whats
wrong? Is there anything I need to enable or disable to
stop this from happening. As of right now, I can only stay
on the internet at the longest for 5 minutes before I get
the error and the computer shuts down. Please HELP!!

When you get the shutdown message...

Go to;  Start --> Run
enter;     shutdown -a

This will halt the shutdown and give you a chance to Download the McAfee worm removal tool,
Stinger:  http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/  or the Microsoft Lovsan/Blaster and Nachi/Welchia
Removal Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E70A0D8B-FE98-493F-AD76
-BF673A38B4CF&displaylang=en

and install the following patch for the RPC/RPCSS Buffer Overflow Vulnerability that is
addressed by Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-39  http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=824146

Please read:  http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

You also need a FireWall.  If you don't patch the PC and not use a FireWall then you will
just be re-infected.

I also suggest the installation of *ALL* MS Critical Updates ASAP.

Where did you buy it from? You have the MS Blaster worm:

Where have you been the last 5 months? Antarctica? No, even antarctica
has a news connection. Must be nuclear submarine on hidden tour or
some trouble with law.
And you are in the wrong newsgroup.

Ever heard of BLASTER worm? No? This one is looking for unpatched
windows NT/2000/XP computers open to port 135. It will try to infect
2000/XP machines only. The worm is some kind of stupid and will try to
reinfect a system. There are two routines (every 5th attack will
assume that a 2000 system is running, the others assumes there is an
XP). As a side effect for failed infection your RPC service will be
corrupted and this will force a reboot.

You may be (or not) infected already, forcing your computer to spread
out infected emails with faked address fields and trying to infect
other computers all over the world.

Activate your firewall and patch your system immediately, use a
disinfection tool to remove the worm.
Visit www.microsoft.com and search for BLASTER/SWEN.

Ciao, Walter
