My problem is with IE 5.5 on a NT workstation SP6a with
all the updated patches. Several weeks ago the user
noticed that his browser was being redirected to a
different website than he originally set for a default. He
would reset it, but then it would change once he rebooted.
The user did not report this issue until now. However,
the problem has grown much worse as the browser crashes
into a Dr. Watson error upon startup, but only if it is
trying to open an online webpage. It opens other files
just fine (i.e. locally stored .html files, .jpg file,
etc.) I initially suspected a virus because of the site
redirect, but I found none.
I've have searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base without
any success. I've installed IE 6.0, copied 5.5 files from
other PCs, and said a prayer to the silicon gods and the
problem still exists.
If anyone has any thoughts, please share.

Sounds like a hijacking Trojan.

Go to McAfee and/or Trend and perform an online scan of the platform and report back your
findings.

I ran a scan using the SYSClean files from Trend and it
did not return any viruses found.

Assuming the Trend utility signatures were up-to-date !

Then it my be not a virus, Trojan or worm but an adware parasite.
