Question about Win 2000 Pro (Built on NT Technology).

I couldn't find Windows 2000s own message board, so as it says it is built on
NT Tech I thought this would be the best place to ask.

I bought an old iPaq running Win 2000 Pro from an office which was closing.
They were good enough to provide me with the necessary User name and Password
to Log on (required after starting and pressing Ctrl Alt Del).  However there
are two "places" I can log on to.  The "old company" and "this computer"
however the password only works for the "old company" option.

I want to use the computer on a home network and the web, and I obviously
don't want the computer to be trying to connect up to some old servers all
the time or anything.  Is there any way I can change this start up and wipe
all the passwords, etc.  Basically like reinstall it but without physically
doing so as they didn't provide me with discs.

Thanks in advance for some technical answers or advice on where better to
post this.

Set a new local administrator password then disjoin it from the domain.

Thanks for your quick response Dave, I am glad you answered, after looking at
previous postings, they were so thin on the ground that I wondered if anybody
would still be following this forum.

You said: "Set a new local administrator password then disjoin it from the
domain."

Any thoughts on how to do this?  I have seen other threads here about how to
"recover" forgotten passwords, etc. but I have a password and username
(possibly somebody's old initials, not "administrator") so I can get access
to the computer.  But at no time in the log on stage do I see any reference
to Administrator or the like.  How do I set this new local admin password and
disjoin it from the domain?

Thanks in advance, A Taxed Mind.

To reset the Administrators password you can do a google search to
something like this "reset password windows 2000". You should get
references to alot of programs to do this.
Then to disjoin from the Domain, if it's the same as NT 4.0, you go
into the control panel & select Network then the tab Identification
then select Change & change it to Workgroup.
Hope this helps. By the way, I believe Windows 2000 is also refered to
NT 5.0.

Admin Tools|User Manager then set a new password for the local administrator
or just create a new local account with administrative rights. Then on the
workstation, Control Panel|Network, on the "Identification" tab, "Change" to
member of Workgroup
