Trying to install / apply Windows Update 841873 -
Vulnerability in Task Scheduler Could Allow Code
Execution. (See
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-
022.mspx ).
When attempting to apply via Windows Update, it simply
says it failed to apply the patch.
When I directly download the install file from the page
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyId=D4F57F82-D2BA-411A-8B40-
77A3D80E58AC&displaylang=en
, and attempt to run, a dialog appears which says, "You
must have Windows NT 4.0 to run this" or some such
nonsense, and that's all.
Has anybody had this problem? If so, did you fix it? If
so, how?
wab.

Is Internet Explorer 6.x installed (with or without the new Shell [like
Win98] ) ?

I've been having this problem also. Its amazing, a microsoft patch which
contains a bug.
I've had a fiddle with my NT 4 system and figured out this workaround:
1) Download the patch from the microsoft using the URL on your original
post.
4) Stop any non-essential services/tasks that may interfere with the install
3) Open a command prompt window
4) Change Directory to wherever you have saved the patch
5) Extract the patch from the installer using:
IE-KB841873-WindowsNT4sp6-x86-ENU.exe -t:<some temporary folder> -c
6) Change directory to the temporary folder
7) install the patch by using:
ieupdate Q841873
8) delete the temporary folder
9) Reboot. You can check to see if this has worked by looking at the
about dialogue in Internet Explorer or going to windows update again.
Hope this helps,
Chris.
