I have a customer running a web site that streams windows media files.
The video samples stream on request.
The only problem with it. There seems to be a backwards compatbility
issue. If the videos are streamed onto an older version of Windows
Media Player (anything Before WMP 9) theres audio but no video.

I was wondering if there was a way to get the older windows media
player to play the files as well.

If I could get it to support just WMP 7 and 8, That would be fine.

If anyone has any information, I could sure use the help.

Thanks

It's possible that you're using the v9 Video Codecs which haven't been
installed on the older players.  I believe the older players will
automatically prompt the user to download the new codec, but there may be
cases or settings in the player where this doesn't happen automatically.

Are you using v9 Video codecs when creating your content?

Thanks for using Windows Media Technologies.

Thanks for your response
In the Windows Media Encoder it does not specify a specific codec when
converting from avi to wmv. There is not an option I can see for
choosing a different codec.

Is there some other way that I can encode to make the videos
compatible with older players?

Please try this and see if you find the different codec options. I presume
that you are using the Windows Media Encoder 9.

1. Open up your regular encoding session with your profile (.wme) file. If
you input things by hand, finish everything till you get to the point just
before start encoding.
2. At that point, click on Properties tab on the encoder.
3. On the page that comes up, choose "Compression".
4. Click on the "Edit" tab on that page. A dialog box pops up.
5. On that dialog box, you would see a section with title as "Media Type"
with Audio and Video. There is a corresponding "Codec" option for each
which is probably what you are looking for. Choose the older video codec.

Hope this helps.

Ken,

WMP 7 & 8 are capable of streaming/playing the 9 Series codecs; as long as
the codecs are downloaded. The help docs or someone on the player newsgroup
should be able to provide more help on this.

Regarding your question about selecting different codecs in the encoder,
you can do this in the 9 Series Encoder user interface by going to Session
Properties --> Compression tab.  Press the Edit button, then you should see
the drop down menus for selecting different codecs.   I recommend that you
continue to use the 9 Series codecs and investigate why the codecs aren't
automatically downloaded by the player.

Thanks for using Windows Media Technologies.
