I have a pretty large WMV file - about 100MB at 1080i. I don't seem to
see a big difference in where it pauses if I just link to the file via http
or if I use Windows Media services. It will pause about every 10 seconds
and rebuffer. I have a T3. Any recommendations short of lowering the
resolution? I'm testing on right now when we have virtually no traffic on
our network. The server has just about everything I can find set for
unlimited and cached. The server has 24 GIGs of memory, a quad core 3 GHz
processor and tons of fast storage. Network, processor and memory
utilization barely register when I playback a file. My PC has a 5Mbit
connection to the internet, a 3GHz core 2 processor, tons of free disk space
and 2 GIGs of RAM and 512MB 8800 video card (no problem playing the file
locally) - The most utilization I'm seeing is CPU at 24%., memory at 900MB
and network at 5%

It is your connection to the Internet, or the servers connection to
the internet; not the server hardware.
Are you certain that your server has enough bandwidth?
We have 1.5 gig files that hundreds of users view concurrently
Your '5 mbps' connection to the internet is not truly 5 mbps to the
streaming server.
Additionally, there is latency that also results in reduction in
throughput.
Try ftp'ing the file down to you, and see what your download speed is
from your server

Even on the same lan segment going through a gigabit switch it is choppy.
At home my download speed of files from that server is 660 KB/s. Do you
have any 1.5 Gig files that are at 1080i? I can see bigger video files at
lower resolution with no issue.

FYI - I put the ORIGINAL full 1080i version of this file on my server for
testing (not this low res copy). If you have the 1080i version feel free
to put it on your server and test. The original file is about 100 MB and
called Coral_Reef_Adventure_1080.wmv
