Hi I've set up wm services 9 on win 2003 alright but now I
want to use the remote web adminstrator and I keep getting
a error message. Specifically, it loads a web page
saying "The Windows Media Services service was
unavailable. Check that it is installed on the specified
computer."

It is installed (and streaming just fine) and I'm only
trying to administer the local computer. I can't
understand what could be going wrong. I've tried using
either SSL or http authentication. I've looked in all the
documentation with no luck. Please help!

Few things we can check together here.

First, can you start your web services "http://localhost:8080/default.asp"?
If not, please check your machine IIS for WMS Web services was set to
"start" in Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> IIS ->Web
Site -> Windows Media Administion Site. Alos check your IP does not
conflict with other ports.

The remote admin uses Client -> ASP -> WMS connection to do the job.

If WMS is on the ASP box, then probably is security setting are invalid
(Account should be Administrator accout)

If WMS is on a remote box (from ASP), then you must NOT use "Intergrated
Windows authentication" default option, which option is under Computer
Management -> Services and Applications  -> IIS ->Web Site -> Windows Media
Administion Site->Properties windows.    Instead you should use "Basic
authentication" option.
These are due to the design based on DCOM features.

Please try it, see if it helps. Thanks for using Windows Media Services 9
services

Thanks for the suggestions... but they didn't help. It
doesn't look like it's a problem with authentication. It
looks like the problem is that the web administrator is
unable to connect to the windows media server.

Another possibility is the wmsservertypelib.dll register problem.  You can
write a simple VBS program to verfy this error by creating a server object
and ask for its name.  If this fails, then please try to hand register
wmsservertypelib.dll. This file should be in c:\windows\system32\windows
media\server\ directory.

Does the MMC snap-in work?

Thanks for using Windows Media Technologies
