If I am running windows 2000 pro can I only upgrade to windows xp pro or can
I just upgrade to windows xp?

If you want to do an in-place upgrade you will have to upgrade to XP
Professional.  An in-place upgrade is installing XP over Windows 2000
while keeping your programs, settings and data.  If on the other hand
you want to format your drive and start from scratch then your Windows
2000 Professional media (CD) would qualify as an upgradable product.

Sorry, last sentence should read:

If on the other hand you want to format your drive and start from
scratch then your Windows 2000 Professional media (CD) would qualify as
an upgradable product for either XP Home or XP Pro.

The only upgrade path for Windows 2000 to Windows XP is Pro

If you install on a formated hard drive XP Home upgrade will accept an
NT4 or Windows 2000 CD as valid proof of ownership and clean install.  I
just installed one less than a week ago for a friend and XP Home Upgrade
accepted NT4 CD.

Thanks for the correction. That's interesting. It should not have worked.

I know.  I was surprised to see it accept the CD.  I had told my friend
seconds earlier that we were probably going to need a W98 CD to install
but it took the bait.  He had an IBM with Windoows 2000 on a service
partition but his hard drive failed utterly and he was force to buy an
operating system to put on a new drive, IBM would not provide a
replacement OS because the pc is out of waranty.

I have WINPro2000 loaded.    I <thought> I was buying an upgrade to XP 2000
Home.     You guessed it - another Ebay loser.    Anyway,a unless I partition
my hard drive, it will not upgrade - it is also OEM which I deliberately
tried to avoid but the seller conveniently ommitted.    I'm trying to avoid
cleaning off my hard drive and having to re-load all my software and restore
backups etc.
Any suggestions?

Thanx...............

You don't have much choice, unless you get an XP Pro retail or upgrade
version you will have to format and clean install or install on a
different partition.  For starters OEM versions cannot do upgrades and
secondly Windows 2000 cannot be upgraded to XP Home, it can only be
upgraded to XP Pro.

John, I am trying to upgrade Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP.  I have the cd
rom  for upgrade but its Windows XP home edition and everytime I try to
upgrade, it won't let me, says OS does not support, can't locate path, etc.
So I don't have to spend a lot more money, can you please tell me what to do
to upgrade my system?  Please keep it simple--I'm still learning about
computers.  Thanks.

As you have already found out and read in the other posts, Windows 2000
cannot be upgraded to XP Home, if you want to upgrade it to XP you have
to upgrade it to XP Pro.  If you have bought the upgrade cd from a
reputable source you can explain the problem and ask for return
privileges against a XP Pro upgrade version.

Otherwise you will have to do a clean install of XP Home, that means of
course that you will loose all your files and programs when you do the
installation.  Back up all your files and then boot the computer with
the upgrade cd and follow the on screen instructions.
