Hello,

Another user (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,18303288) and I are
having problems with KB867801 that keeps saying it is installed
successfully after getting today's new updates for Windows 2000 SP4.
Rerunning Windows Update result it is available to install (already
downloaded in cache).

I tried downloading the EXE file manually and running it without Windows
Update, and the installer tells me I need IE6.0 SP1. Well, I already
have IE6.0 SP1 installed and for years! I noticed the KB document
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4C2F8A40-1B88-4F93-98B1
-1619DCFD7273&displaylang=en
)
was from 2004 so it's old.

What's going on and how do I fix it (or is it MS' fault?)? Thank you in
advance. :)

You may try http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/Q867801-WUFix.zip for a
q&d fix. Download the file and extract the containing "Q867801-WUFix.reg".
Afterwards double click the REG file and let it merge into the registry.
Finally shut down all opened IE windows and see if WU/AU still offers
KB/Q867801.

I've informed the MSRC by mail about the issue I can confirm for
Windows 2000 systems, depending on their update history.

I think I will wait for MS fix. :) I don't want to get an unofficial
workaround that causes more problems later on. :) Thanks though.

Well, I can guarantee you, that there are no problems with the q&d
fix, at least none I'm aware of. I bet you don't find an ";Q867801;"
entry when looking in IE via "?/Help -> Info -> Update versions",
right? That's what the q&d fix fixes. Nothing more or less. It "may"
last some time, until MS get's WU fixed...

Yeah, that did work. Just want an official fix. :) Thanks though.

Well, nothing new as of yet I'm aware of. MSRC forwarded the message
about the issue to the "WU guys" and these are looking into the issue.
Hope never dies, but...

The detection error seems to have been fixed right now.
Windows 2000 users: Please try opening the Windows Update site once
more and scan for any needed updates.

I'm having the same problem, and I used the file you mentioned, but now
Windows Update is pestering me for a different update, KB831167. I've
actually had to shut off Automatic Updates to prevent putting my fist through
the screen after that icon pops up again. I don't suppose you'd have a fix
for this, too, would you?

While I fear the next old updates will be offered by the amok running
WU detection mechanism for IE6 SP1 updates, I've just updated the
Q867801-WUFix.zip to include Q832894 and Q831167:
http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/Q867801-WUFix.zip

You may want to test that, but it's really clear, that "someone" at
MS needs to fix the WU detection problems on their end.

Hello again

I`ve got simlar Problems to you. Windows 2000 Kulminatives Sicherheitsupdate
für Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894) does not install propper,
the update repeats every few moments.

Today, whenever downloaded an update, i was askt to install IE6 SP1 before
downloading update that is concerning to it, but ist is allready installed.

Perhaps the Problem is quite equal with "Stampit" a service of the German
"Post", where the Server is allways off/out of reach when i want to print a
stamp/postage.

Microsoft Update Website and Stampit Support do not work either.

If you can, please dont let me keep you to give the nice advice.

Hey peoples

I've got the same problem on my Win2K machine, Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894), but I don't speak Deutche
(to follow the link below).

Tried to install the update manually but told I need to install SP1 (which
is already installed).
Tried installing the update for IE6 (no SP1) and told that this update only
works for WindowsXP.
Tried re-installing IE6SP1 but told this update is already installed.

Shall I install the patch as discussed in the realier threads relating to
KB867801? http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/Q867801-WUFix.zip

Or is there a better way?

Cheers

That's usually your clue that you don't need to install whatever it is that
you are trying to install.   Instead of giving a clear reason for failure
updates try to be "helpful" and guess at the most likely reason for
that symptom and then state *that* reason as the thing that you ought
to do to fix the problem.

Figure out why  WU  thinks you need the update and change that?
Supposedly verbose mode helps with that   (Ref.  KB902093)
but I have never been able to decipher some of the things it shows.
I have more luck using  ProcMon  to supplement the logging
(e.g. registry and file accesses which lead to each log record)
in which case then the verbose logging would be just extra information
to interleave with that.

The last time that this happened with your OS  it was a rollup that
didn't have all the necessary pre-requisites understood.
Dave Hawley used the above technique to figure those out.

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/00d6dcccecd2952c

(Google Groups search for
   dave hawley  "pre-requisites"  group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate
)

Probably that resolution will have to be updated by whatever new set
of pre-requisites is not understood by the update that you are trying
to install.

Good luck

Because of "missing" hyperfluend version numbers of updates in
the "MinorVersion" key. WU suddenly insists on these values:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"MinorVersion"=";SP1;Q823353;Q832894;Q831167;Q867801;"

Otherwise it will reoffer the whole bunch of outdated "Cumulative
Updates" for IE running in Windows 2000 *although* KB931768 has
been successfully installed. It's WU beeing on error and nothing
to be fixed finally on the user's end.

Yup, the updated workaround is trying to fix WU recognition errors
for IE 6 SP1 users running Windows 2000, in case WU offers KB867801,
KB832894, KB831167 and/or KB823353 *although* KB931768 (MS07-027)
has been successfully installed on the machine already.

why are these not appearing in the Add or Remove Programs as an installed

Cause theses updates are very, very old updates (dated sometime
around 2004/2005) which have been replaced various times by later
released Cumulative Updates for IE - and you have applied the
Update Rollup for Windows 2000 SP4.
