Supposedly fixed by Microsoft ... I THINK NOT.

Hi, John;

Some suggestions:

a. Boot into Safe Mode.  Open Control Panel, then Add&Remove Programs.  If
you see KB923689 listed there, remove it.  If it isn't listed there, go on
to the next item.  If it is listed but won't uninstall, find the
"C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB923689$" folder, then within that run
"C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB923689$\spuninst\spuninst.exe"

b. While still in Control Panel, open the Internet Options applet, and on
the General tab hit the Delete Files... button, check the option to remove
offline content, then let that process complete.

c. While still in Safe Mode, delete the entire folder
"C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution"   You will lose your AU/WU history, but
that isn't a big deal.

d. While still in Safe Mode, delete the contents of all Temp folders.  These
would be C:\Windows\Temp, the two Temp and Tmp folders set up for your
profile (usually "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp),
and the Temp/Tmp folders used by the system (assuming these are different).

e. Reboot back into Normal Mode.  Update your AV package data files and run
a full scan of the system.

f. Now open IE (even if it isn't your default browser) and go to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en  You will
get some files downloaded as MU reconfigures the SoftwareDistribution folder
for use.  When the page is ready, do a Custom scan; deselect everything
except KB923689, and install that update.

If the update again fails, report back with whatever errors you see on the
screen, and the bottom 15-or-so lines (not the full file) of the
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.LOG file. (be sure you get the one without the
space in the name <g>).

The update just hangs ... It does exactly the same via the manual
install.

Hi, John;

On the Start line, enter "services.msc" and then scroll down to the DCOM
entry.  Check that it is set to Automatic.  If not started, Start it.  Then
attempt the manual install again (download a fresh copy from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ef2dbcb6-cc8e-4299-a1e6
-e6db202b41d5&displaylang=en

============

If that also fails, boot into Safe Mode.  On the Run line enter "regsvr32 /u
c:\Winnt\system32\wmvcore.dll"  and view the results.  You may get an error
message or a success one --- note which.  Now delete that file.  Then (still
in Safe Mode) run the Windows2000-KB923689-x86-ENU.EXE again.

Reboot back into Normal mode.  Verify that wmvcore.dll is now in your
System32 folder, and that the version number is greater than 9.0.0.3352.  On
the Run line enter "regsvr32 c:\Winnt\system32\wmvcore.dll"  (no "/u" this
time).  You should get a success message.  If so, you can consider this KB
update installed --- we just backdoored the file into place.

Now Restart one more time (Normal mode). Please post back with the version
number of WMVCORE.DLL that is now in your System32 folder.

BTW, I have been working under the assumption that you are logged in with
full Administrator rights.  If that isn't the case, you will need to use a
different account or have someone else assist you.  There is a bit of
question about permissions in some areas of the logs you sent, but generally
those are inconsequential for this type of update.

I am logged in as Administrator

1) Hang again

2)

After typing regsvr32 /u c:\Winnt\system32\wmvcore.dll

I got the message "c:\Winnt\system32\wmvcore.dll was loaded but
dllUnregisterEntrypoint not found"

"dllUnregisterEntrypoint may not be exported or a corrupt version may be
in memory consider using pview to remove it"

I then renamed wmvcore.dll to wmvcore.olddll instead of removing it and
ran Windows2000-KB923689-x86-ENU.EXE which appeared to work ok this time
however it did *not* put a wmvcore.dll into c:\Winnt\system32\.

I use WMP 9.0 and I can see a WMVCORE.DLL (9.0.0.3353) in

C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download\8c745e0efc816f316958e465e1cfb79f\
WMP9L\WMVCORE.DLL

Should I just copy that to c:\Winnt\system32\. and run regsvr32
c:\Winnt\system32\wmvcore.dll?

Have you done a Restart since the last install of the KB?  If not, please do
so then check System32 again for that file.

IF the file still isn't in System32 after the Restart, the manual copy/paste
sounds good to me. :)  We are well into the guesswork stage at this point.

I think the update checked the wmvcore.dll version to determine what dll
of three it has to copy so when it was absent it just fell over.

I copied and pasted the file from the update and it seems to work and
Windows Update seems convinced its ok ...

Still leaves that lingering unsatisfactory taste in my mouth though or a
bodge.

I know what you mean, but not sure of the best next steps in order to get
that puppy to install as it should.  Short of you upgrading to WMP 10 <g>.

Looks like there is a problem with  wmvcore.dll.
What version of that module do you have installed?

Apparently something is already using it
so you will need to reboot to get the copy done.
Alternatively perhaps you could stop whatever it is that
is blocking an immediate copy.   E.g. use   tasklist  /v

   tasklist  /v  /fi  "Modules eq wmvcore.dll"

or use  Process Explorer's Search function (Ctrl-f) to find any Handle
entries which contain that module name.   Presumably the same functionality
is present in the superseding tool, ProcMon, but I haven't figured out how
to do that yet.

Ah.  My mistake.   Only  RegMon and FileMon  have been superseded
by  ProcMon  (which now seems also to duplicate some features of ProcExp.)
Process Explorer  still lives:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

(Live Search for
   "process explorer"  site:microsoft.com
)

Good luck
