For some reason the auto update & notify didnt.
Did manual Win Update, a number of updates for this Tuesday? shown
Installs all failed, after fiddling with services managed to install most.
Whilst this was going on the autoupdate icon appeared in the task bar
(downloading 0%), but then dissapeared, before manual update was done.
The following all failed to install Kb927977,927978 (win) 919029,921587
(office2003)
The err codes 0x641 & 0x80070641 didnt lead to anything in the KB
As they had downloaded but not installed, assumed download corrupted so
deleted all temp files, cache etc & update folder
Tried again with same err (where are updates saved prior to installation?)
Downloaded, saved, via admin updates, on installation err 'updates cannot be
applied'
Any advice?

Updates are stored in C:\Winnt\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads

Sometimes the BITS database gets totally corrupted.  Try removing the
database under:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader

Remove the *.dat files there (you may have to Stop the BITS Service first).

Also try using the esentutl program to check if the DataStore.edb file is
non-corrupted.

esentutl /g C:\Winnt\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb (checks
integrity of database)
esentutl /p C:\Winnt\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb (repairs
database)
esentutl /d C:\Winnt\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb
(defragments database)

You many need to run:

net stop wuauserv

prior to running esentutl utility.

Then run:

net start wuauserv

when completed.

Other than rebooting my sys a couple of times I had'nt touched it.
Auto download icon notified me updates ready to install.
Installed the two notified, resulting in a success.
Then did manual update, which showed some 5 updates, including the two
supposedly prev.successfully installed.
All failed, checked services and found BITS had reset to manual.

So deleted the downloads and followed the rest of your post, the datastore
was reported as valid, but did a defrag on it.
Ran update again but still all failed, note also that updates saved via
Admin. update also failed 'updates cannot be applied'
