I think this is the 4th time this machine has done this.  On the reboot
after installing an update, the bootup fails with
"Unable to find NTLDR file".   Rebooting generally doesn't help, but this
time, anyway, unplugged machine for a while
and coldbooted, and it was fine.   I think this was pretty much the routine
on past occurences.
Boot drive is ATA-100 on Highpoint controller.
I realize Windows updates may be a coincidence, but it's a pretty long one,
considering multiple events.
How can Win2k fail to find NTLDR on occasion when obviously, it's there?

Thanks, Bill

I don't have an answer, but a couple of observations. How often is this
machine rebooted, I would hazard a guess that the controller driver and
maybe locked files combined with a reboot (no hardware reset?) is
responsible.

you can boot from a windows 98/me startup disc to get in and back up files
on the pc , backup disk you can boot any windows pc

at the beginning of the boot drive usually drive c is the OS boot record
which loads the first program file of the OS> for windows 9x/ME that program
is Io.sys windows NT/2000/xp the program is ntldr
if the file is corrupt you will need to boot from another sorce or copy the
ntldr file from the cd-rom/floppy to the hidden file of ntldr.
you might have to use ms-dos or command prompt. for this.

Actually I was able to reboot in safe mode and I picked the option to start
up windows 2000 to the most recent compatable installation and everything
seemed to work. I was able to install everthing and even connect to the
internet with a wireless adapter. Thanks to everyone that has helped in this
situation.
