Is there a way to remove the $NTUninstall, etc. stuff without losing the
ability to recover  files?

Seems that most/many of the uninstall/log files created by windows/office
update are not needed, but I've not seen a clean way to remove them.

Copy the $NTUninstall folders to a CD or other external device and delete
the folders from your drive.  If you even need to uninstall something,
copy the necessary folder back.  If you decide you want one of those older
files, you can simply pick it off the CD.

What about the entries in Add/Remove programs?
Cannot just delete the files.

You *can* just delete the files, if that's what you want.  I've done that,
leaving the registry entries alone.  Of course, if you're really sure that
you will never want to uninstall anything, you can delete those entries as
well.  If you were truly obsessive about backup, you might export those
entries first and save them along with the uninstall folders.

The answer might be in KB article 290402.
