Updates not applied automatically (why?)

I have a windows 2000 server (SP4) and I've enabled automatic updates
(to d/l and install at 5:00 AM, after the backup runs) through the
Automatic Updates in the Control Panel.

When I come in in the morning I see the icon in the tray that updates
are available but not applied yet.

I have been manually installing these by double clicking the tray icon
each time it appears but this is a pain.

How can I either fix this or diagnose why the updates are not
auto-installing??

Did you see my reply to your earlier post in here?

No, I sure didn't. Where is it?

I don't see it in this group so perhaps it was in another group. Where else
did you post, and have you tried searching for replies to your posts?

I have exactly the same issue, only just started happenning also.  I have
checked the GPO that roll sout pacthes and it is set to autoinstall during
the early hours.

Lanwench, could you post your reply here please if you get a chance?

Sorry, I don't remember where it is. I sub to a lot of groups and won't be
able to find this in my sent items as they are regularly purged.

Okay.... having watched this thread drag on for two weeks.... now I'm going
to jump in and offer the simple answer that -should- have simply been
re-offered two weeks ago.

First, you really do -not- want to automatically install updates on a server
via a scheduled event, unless the availability of the server is not
critical. A defective installation of an update, or an issue with the
restart process, could make for a very unpleasant morning after a 5am
scheduled installation.

However, if you really do want a 5am installation, I understand that your
question is why your scheduled installation is not working correctly. The
first step is to determine that the updates were fully downloaded -before-
the scheduled installation. It's possible that the timing of the detection
cycle, and the downloading of the updates, did not make it possible to meet
the 5am installation time.

The good news is that all of this is logged, so it will be easy to trace
what exactly did happen. Please post the entries from the logfile at
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log starting from the time
when you did the installation, and going back 24 hours.

It's also possible that you don't really have a scheduled installation
configured, but only have AU configured to use Option #3. With Option #3,
updates are downloaded, but not installed. The AU client ignores the
scheduled installation setting in that case.

I did my friendly volunteer work in the other group. It isn't my job to go
hunt through five hundred sent items to find the original message the OP
should have remembered posting on his own.

I absolutely agree.
