Using Windows 2000 Professional I cannot seem to get the last seven
Microsoft Updates downloaded/installed.  When I click on 'Install
Updates' the 'Installing Updates' screen indicates "Updates were Unable
to be Successfully Installed".

I noticed in Component Services that the Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) is NOT started/ing.  The Properties are set to 'manual'
start, however if I try to manually start the service I get the
following error:

"Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on
local computer. Error 1083: The executable program that this service is
configured to run in does not implement the service."

Do you think this could be my problem?  What could be causing this
error?  Any suggestions and/or thoughts would be appreciated.

Steven

You definitely need BITS to do automatic MS updates.

I and others have had problems with BITS suddenly not working, after months
of successful operation.

Your error message suggests that the program in Services is incorrect.

Try Computer Management/Services/Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
In the General tab, the "Path to executable" field in my system reads
C:\WINNT\Systemn32\svchost.exe -k BITSgroup

I have no idea what the command line refers to, but at least it tries to
start, then fails part way through with a message:

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with
service-specific error 2147942402.

Have  you looked at Windows Update (html page), then Update History? It
should reflect your unsuccessful attempt(s), along with any successful
attempt(s). Sort them in date order, then check your records for what you
did after last successful update, before first unsuccessful one. The Event
Viewer logs will tell you things that happened after last successful update.

Good luck!

David, my path indicates:

E:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

I can see no way to edit the path, any ideas?  I've tried reading
multiple sites and tried several things to correct this problem, which
started when MS updated the Update site.  Before this I was always able
to manually check the site, or let Windows 2000 check it automatically,
and download and apply any updates.

At this point I'm out of ideas and have not noticed any new fix attempts
that I have not already tried.

Still open to suggestions though,

Steven
