Hi!   My computer downloads recommended windows updates, but I always get a
"failed installation" error message.  I updated the "windows update" software
version but that didn't help.....OS is Windows 2000.

Any ideas? .....Thanks!

If you go into C:\Windows and then look for a WindowsUpdate.log and scroll
all the way to the bottom, you should see a few error messages like Warning:
0x80240020 etc.  Post the last few lines from your log and I'll see what I
can come up with.  If it's the dreaded 0x80240020 there is no fix at this
time and your guess is as good as mine.

Hi Sandy,

Look in C:\WINNT. On my system, WindowsUpdate.log is there. Or do a file
search for WindowsUpdate.log.

Which Service Pack do you have? My Computer > Properties > General Tab will
show it.
You can also use winver.exe for that info, and more. It's located in
C:\WINNT\system32\. To run it:
Start Menu> Run > and enter winver.exe > select Ok.

I see no evidence that you've installed the buggy and problem causing
"Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4."

Doug...

THANK YOU!  Nice of you to guide me... in WINNT I found a "Windows update"
file that didn't say ".log", but it seems to have the info Nocturnal might be
looking for.

The service pack I have is Service pack 4(windows 2000).

FYI  for all:       Some of the updates worked today(no clue why/how), but I
keep getting error message for "Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB896727)"
--------->the message I get is "Error Code: 0x8007F02B "

Yw, Sandy.

The extension .log isn't included because of your folder settings. If you
open a folder, then select

Tools > Folder Options > View > Hide file extensions for known file types
...you'll see that the box is checked. Uncheck it to see extensions; most
people do.
Good news that some WUs worked. Try rebooting after each update, whether
it's suggested or not.

Also, do NOT download the Update Rollup 1! It's bad, causes problems. MS
states that "soon" it's going to re-release it. Details are given at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891861

I also just noticed that I neglected to mung my email address. Damn! After a
clean reinstall of W2K, I forgot that detail. Junk mail from bots!

Hey, Dugie!

I, too, despise the bots!  I feel your pain...

OK....I did some digging, and noticed that someone DID, in fact, install the
Update rollup 1 on July 19.   Now what ?!?   Must I remove it? and how?

I looked on add/remove programs...not listed.  I did a search (after
changing settings as you suggested)....and there's a text doc file
"UpdateRollupPack.log", as well as a couple of htm docs w/install
info....that's it.

I really appreciate your input...(will reboot after WUs in future.)

Well, I hope a few slips won't hurt and I may escape the bots..
Would you please check my identity now? For both Reply and Rely Group, only
my d_fren@NOSPAMhotmail.com should show up.

If you check the overwhelming info at the link I gave below, you'll find
what you need to know.
It shows in my Add/Remove Programs under the update name of "Update Rollup 1
for Windows 2000 SP4." But it gave me this warning when I tried to
uninstall:

"If Update Rollup 1 is removed, these programs might not run properly. Do
you want to continue?"
The list of progs included some MS hotfixes, and many other non-MS products,
so I didn't uninstall. Good luck with your decision.

Overwhelming is right!  lotsa info .... I'll shuffle through it when I have
more time.

I checked  your user profile for you, and it shows the email address you
mentioned and says "No info available".

Thanks for your time and effort...greatly appreciated.

Hi Good Patient People,

Thanks so much for the info.  Please include me should hear of a fix...
ninen8@sbcglobal.net or dem@2b1inc.com.  I will do same by posting back here.

Fyi, I just recovered from a similar problem on win2k server.  Thanks to the
good people in that newgroup discussion.  I was able to resolve.
