Jeezz! Microsoft has now gone totally over the top - perhaps not for those
with broadband (free) internet access, but certainly for those of us who use
dial-up connections it is way over the top!
Try to register for a .NET passport, and the server says this:

DUH! DOUBLE DUH!!
How often have I asked Microsoft to mirror the update site around the
world? I see there's a "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4"
(KB891861) but it's 31.2 MB and will take over 11 hours to download. There
is no remove option any longer and if one accepts the "Install updates" the
download size is 52.4MB and the estimated download time at my connection
speed is 19 hours and 53 minutes. Who has that amount of time to be
connected to the internet waiting on Microsoft's server in Redmond to concur
with the request and download 52.4MB of information to my PC?
Why does M$ not offer a CD option? Get the updates on a CD? Huh?
