Hi guys,

When I try to install SP4 I keep getting the same message "The file
C:\WINNT\System32\tapi3.dll is open or in use by another application. Close
all other applications and then click Retry"
So far, I have done:

1. I closed all applications/programs that were running including Antivirus
software, firewall, anti-spyware, etc.

2. I tried to install SP4 in "safe mode" after running virus check and
anti-spyware in safe mode.

3. I disabled some of the services from Computer Mgmt

4. I checked to see if I can end some processes from Windows Task Manager.

Please help me if you can. Thank you!

TAPI* should belong to a telephone-application. Is there something like
this still running?

Hello Juergen,

First - Danke Schoen for your reply.
Unfortunately, no telephone application is running - I checked
everything...I will try to install SP4 from a CD - don't know what else to
do...
Thanks again!

Hello Carolina,

Hm, but TAPI is short for Telephone Application Programming Interface
... not only in Germany, I think ;-)

Have you used the SP4-package "Network Installation" (ca. 125 MB) or do
you use "Windows-Update"?

With ServicePacks I always prefer the downloadable packages. I've never
installed a MS-ServicePack via the website.

Website:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/default.asp

... also with a link to order the CD.

Another hint:
I'm not shure, but I think, you have to reinstall all patches after
SP4-Installation. Because it's nearly unpossible to do this secure
online by Windows-Update with an unconfigured PC, configure the
Windows-Services, _before_ the first online-session.
I'm always using the script from this website:
http://www.ntsvcfg.de/ntsvcfg_eng.html

Additional: I've all patches in the executable version on my local
harddisk.

Ok :-)

Hi;

Could it be that your source file for the SP4 install is corrupt?  Was
this a download?  If a download, I suggest you download a new copy or
order the CD.

Hi Sky King,

Thank you for your reply!
Yes it was a download - and I downloaded it twice thinking that the first
install was corrupt...I will have to try the CD. Thanks again!

Check the file Properties on the most recent download.  The file should
be 135,477,136 bytes in size.

That may be your best bet.
