blue screen on reboot after installing updates

Hi. Installed updates to Win2000Pro last night and woke up with blue screen
this morning. I get the blue screen on all attempts to boot: to safe mode, to
last known good config, etc. Tried booting from Win2000 CD: Blue screen on
Repair, blue screen on new installation.

Tried switching out memory chips using all slots - still a blue screen.
Error message: Stop: 0x0000000a, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL address
80444F93base@80400000 date stamp 40dld183
ntoskrnl.exe.

Also tried disabling BIOS memory caching with no effect.
Any ideas, anyone? Thanks very much.

Had a load of these myself going back a few months ago, still not certain
what the cause is though. I tried doing all that MS suggest, removing new
hardware/software (not that anything new had been installed), also went
through the process of updating every single driver on the system, updating
to SP4 etc, it would go away for a while, but it usually came back.
The last thing I did was to turn off S.M.A.R.T. disk monitoring in the BIOS
(after first making sure that there were no problems with the disks -
Seagate tools), and I have had only one reboot since.

Thanks for the post -- unfortunately, I can't get into the system at all to
remove any drivers or reinstall updates or anything. I even get blue screen
when I boot from the Windows 2000 CD. It's so frustrating! Again, thanks for
the post.

You haven't by any chance enabled the driver verification tool
(verifier.exe) have you?
I did this when I was trying to diagnose my Stops. Trouble is, I got a blue
screen every time it rebooted.

If you have run verifier: -
Go into the BIOS and turn off all non essential integrated peripherals. Turn
off SMART monitoring for hard disks (if enabled), turn off USB support, and
onboard modem/lan/sound sub systems. Then try to boot. If you manage to
boot, go back to the BIOS and turn items back on, one at a time and
rebooting each time until the boot fails. Working this way, you should be
able to identify any drivers giving you problems. To get things back to
normal turn off the problem device again, so that you can boot, then run
verifier again with the '/reset' option switch. (Start->Run->verifier
/reset).

If you haven't run the verifier, it is still worth switching off items in
the BIOS until you can get it to boot, at least you would find out which is
the problem device. This would enable you to take backups while you can.
