Update folders at c:/winnt

Hi,

I am running Win2K. When I run Windows updates, some/most
updates place a folder with data under c:/winnt, with the
patch ID(For instance, a folder named KB835732). Do
these folders have to stay put, or are they only necessary
for installing/uninstalling, and can they be removed once
the relevant patch is installed? If I remove these,
will anything stop functioning? My drive is becoming very
pressed for space, and I'd like to remove these individual
folders if it's safe! If it is safe, is there any
particular way I must remove them, other than a simple
DELETE to trash?

If you mean folders with names like $NtUninstallQ329834$, their purpose is
to allow you to uninstall the patch. If you're reasonably sure you're not
going to want to do that, you can delete them. A simple delete is all you
need to do. If you hold the shift key down when you delete, the folders
will be deleted outright instead of going to the recycle bin. I always
copy such things to a CD before deleting them just in case I might later
decide I didn't want to do that after all.

If you are that pressed, have you run Disk Cleanup?
Install a second slave drive, as if you are haveing to delete a few files to
gain space, it wont be long before yr short again.

Duh. I have removed all of the UNINSTALL folders. While
it seemed like a simple enough explanation, I wanted to be
sure the folders and data in them had no other purpose
besides uninstalling that I was unaware of. ;)

Thanks Gary and DL for the info and suggestions. Didn't
mean to overstate my situation. I have some breathing room
on the (10GB) primary drive, but not a lot, and that makes
me nervous. I have cleared up most other unnecessary
files, but the 20+ uninstall folders were taking up a nice
little chunk of space on that drive. I do have a
secondary 80GB drive with plenty of room, but with the
primary being low on space, I felt that may be affecting
performance negatively.

Move yr swap file to the slave disk, don't install apps on C unless
absolutely necessary
