When attempting to download/install SP4, I get the
following error message:
"Service Pack 4 Setup cannot update a checked (debug)
system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 4 or
vice versa."

I would appreciate any help as to what to do next.

You need to get the SP4 version that matches the installed version of
Windows. Either you are using the checked/debug SP4 to upgrade a standard
retail installation, or you are using the standard retail SP4 to upgrade a
checked/debug installed version. Since you can't change the installed
version, you need to get the other service pack.
