Won't run Windows Update. why?

I go to the updates window. Tells me I have four files to
download, I hit "install", the dialog comes up and tells
me it's preparing to download the files, but after 10
minutes, I've given up. Nothing happens. for days now.
WHY?

Have you tried the suggestions in
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ under "Download stops or
freezes. The Windows Update - Web Page Dialog window appears but download
never starts"?
