Hi

I installed win2000 on a friends computer and at some
point he got some updates.  Now the updater pops up
evertime he turns on the computer.  He doesnt like it.  Is
there a way I can turn it off and just update as I see fit.

Thank you

There should be a windows update icon in the system tray.
If you double click on that icon and then uncheck the
checkbox requesting windows to keep your computer up to
date, it will not bring up the pop-up, but it will not
update your machine automatically either.

Right click Properties and change it to manual.
