I downloaded the service pack 4 for windows and now I'm
having problems opening up Internet Explorer.

I can't connect to the internet because when I open IE, a
box saying that internet explorer is having problems and
needs to close comes up.

Any ideas if these two events is related?

It's certainly possible because SP4 and IE have a lot of common files and
some dlls may not have installed or registered correctly.

Have you try reinstalling IE?
