I am attempting to connect an XP workstaion to a win 2k server. I have
never done this before without using routers. Could someone please
break this process down for me like I'm a two year old.

Don't worry about helping me out. I figured it out on my own. I
thought this was a group that would help people like myself......

Sure, but there was nothing in your post to indicate where a Terminal
Server came into the picture and this group is about Terminal Server.
The lack of detail in your description of the problem made it
impossible to answer.
