When using this to connect to my office computer from
home, is there a certain setup I need to go through in
order for these two computers to communicate?  I have read
all of my documentation, but am not sure if I need to have
RDC active on my office computer before dialing in from
home.

Yes, assuming your office PC is running XP, you must enable Remote
Desktop on it. Then you must have the rdp client on your home PC and
if there is a firewall at your office, it must allow traffic through
port 3389 (if you connect over the Internet).
