Printer redirect fails

BW - 22 Nov 2003 03:23 GMT A new Dell Inspiron 5100 with XP Pro, using remote desktop connection, connects to the Terminal Server (Win2k) the local Dell printer Hp920c does not redirect to the terminal session. The drivers are loaded on the server, the only error in the system log is Event 3019, "The redirector failed to determine the connection type"
KB refers to drive mappings and nothing relating to printers.
any suggestions.. .
Vera Noest [MVP] - 22 Nov 2003 12:23 GMT The EventID 3019 has nothing to do with the printer problem. To get your printer autocreated, you will probably have to add a line to your ntprintsubs.inf file to map it to a native driver. I'm not sure which printer model you mean with "Dell printer Hp920c", but I assume that it is a HP DeskJet 920C. In that case, try:
"HP DeskJet 920C" = "HP DeskJet"

The Hp920c has been used before on the server, the client now has a new laptop with XP Pro. His last laptop was Win2kPro.

Vera Noest [MVP] - 22 Nov 2003 20:55 GMT OK, that probably means that the name of the driver is not exactly the same on the server and the XP client. If the name on the client is "HP DeskJet 920 Series" and on the server "HP DeskJet 920", you must add a mapping, otherwise the printer will not autocreate.
Regarding the .inf file: You can put it whereever you want, as long as you enter the full search path in the registry. This is explained in detail in the KB article. Also check KB 239088, which is referenced in KB 275495.

This is a new customer and I don't know the setup of the server, I created a ntprintsubs.inf etc etc, changed the drivers to match exc\act name,, I have noticed that there is an ntprintsubs.pnf , and they are using Kx32.. it looks like a profile is locked down but I don't know where to go next.....

Vera Noest [MVP] - 24 Nov 2003 21:21 GMT Now that you have mapped the printer driver names, does the printer autocreate? Are they using a KiXtart script to configure printers in the TS sessions (that's a common use of KiXtart scripts on a TS)? What do you mean with "it looks like a profile is locked down"?

I even tried to manually add the printer while the client was in TS session, no port was available to map to ie:TS00001 etc. (I did a test on my server at home.. so I know that the procedure is correct) They are running Kix32. It appears that there is a policy, perhaps "ntprintsubs.pnf" that is defining what the user can accept.(printers etc) and maybe bypassing Nt defaults. Do you know what generates .pnf files? The users TS login, points to a Profile$\users directory, which has an ntuser.pol file which I could not open.
Again thanks for any suggestions.

Vera Noest [MVP] - 25 Nov 2003 20:27 GMT To be honest, I can't make head or tail of this, so I've a lot more questions, and hopefully one of them puts you onto the right track.
* have you double-checked the settings regarding printer redirection on the TS and the clients?
* Have you investigated the *content* of the script that they run with kix32, when in the logon process it is running, and where it is executed from (where is it defined?)
* can you open the "ntprintsubs.pnf" file with notepad? Is this file referenced in the registry (in the location that is documented in KB article 275495? If it is not referenced anywhere in the registry, then it is not in use.
* can you open the ntuser.pol file with the system policy editor (which presumably was used to create the file)? Note that you will need to load all the admninistrative templates that were used to create the policy to be able to see they settings.
* have you asked the owners / previous managers *why* they use an NT4.0 stile system policy on a W2K server?

Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for persisting with this pain. I contacted the previous (temp) admin. They are using Kixtart login scripts, I have yet to look at them.
I rechecked the printer redirect settings they are the same as my working test system at home. (Same printer)
The ntprintsubs.pnf I could not open, and Yes, it is in the registry next to the one I created, I could not open the ntuser.pol with poledit, it said I do not have the correct registry setting. (I had not tried loading the admin templates, first.)
I am going back to the site Tuesday and will try again.
I have never had this sort of problem before. I even added the user to the Admin Group and still it would not redirect the printer.
Regards Barry
