How to fix boot failure problem

I recently switched on a server running win2000 server (for the first time
after the daylight savings change) and it crashed early in the startup
process, giving me a blue screen and a text message which unfortunately I
didn't record.
I tried to reboot but now it wouldn't go as far as before, hanging after
displaying 4 lines of diagnostic output reading
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\BOOTVID.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\config\system
I ran a disk utility and the disk is fine.
I googled the problem and found Microsoft Knowledgebase article 817006 which
says
"This problem may occur when the NTFS file system encounters a file record
segment that is corrupted in such a way that the mapping pairs are missing.
NTFS may loop forever in its search for a mapping pair that describes the
Virtual Cluster Number (VCN) that the file system is searching for and the
computer may stop responding."
and "To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft
Windows 2000".
I created a set of setup boot disks which seem to work but what I don't
understand is how I apply the service pack to the server from that position.
Can somebody please advise me?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You can't. The operating system must start in order to install a service
pack.

You could try slipstreaming the service pack.  For more information, see:
