Drive is seen in bios -- but booting with a disk recovery cd indicates
not reconized as NTFS -- which is why I hope the recovery console will
help -- hopefully fix mbr will help.

No...even if you could get to the repair console
fixmbr would only make things worse..
you need to slave the drive to another machine
and run some data recovery software
